Description
Temporomandibular Disease, commonly referred to as TMJ disorder, occurs when undue stress negatively affects the two TM joints, the joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull. This can lead to chronic pain, frequent headaches or earaches, and clicking or locking of the jaw.
Potential causes of TMJ:
- Clenching or grinding teeth while sleeping
- Excessive muscle tension
- Trauma
- Misaligned teeth

These treatments range from daily exercises to night guards. In extreme cases, a muscle relaxant may be prescribed in order to help patients relax the jaw muscles until other healthy habits are established.
